I think the comment about the cabal of Jews was sarcasm- another article here called Harding pretty left-wing. I doubt she'd blame Jewish people for the diet industry. It was a bad choice of wording.

It sounds like you haven't done a whole lot of research on the genetics of obesity.

The MC4R gene codes for a receptor in a chemical pathway that plays a major part in controlling satiety. If your body can't produce MC4R receptors, you brain will not get the signal that you're no longer hungry. Remember the obese leptin-deficient mice from highschool bio textbooks? The MC4R receptor is part of the pathway that processes leptin.

Normally, you have two copies of that gene. If only one copy of the gene has a defect, you're going to process about half the leptin a normal person does. If you have two defective copies though, you're going to process very little leptin (a very small amount gets processed in other ways).

Scientists still aren't sure exactly how the protein FTO codes for effects the body. But, like MC4R, it effects BMI and satiety, particularly in young people.

I'm not sure about MC4R's effect on metabolism, so I can't tell you if it effects fat storage or burning. But I can tell you that if you're homozygous for a MC4R or FTO mutation, you're faced with the choice of eating more than most normal people, or being hungry all the damn time.

This is a great read! Thanks for making me laugh!
"Genetic Set Point" was one of my faves. I'm disappointed that you didn't add "Health At Every Size" to your lexicon. I guess "fat and fit" is close enough.

This all seems so hateful. I mean, Fat Acceptance is Body acceptance. Most FA blogs encourage loving your body fat or thin or in between.

This seems like it's just making jokes of human beings which is NEVER right no matter what they look like or who you think they are.

Just because a person is fat doesn't mean they're a glutton. Doesn't mean their lazy. That's like saying black people are stupid and Jews are greedy.

Can't fat people let thin people be thin and thin people let fat people be fat? Seems like that'd be best.

Good stuff!

Speaking of FA nonsense, there is a great section in the new Eades book, The Six-Week Cure for the Middle Aged Middle discussing research that disproves the FA movement's claim that the relationship between thinness and beauty is a matter of culture or created by the fashion industry.

Dude... an evil cabal of Jews?! Haven't they suffered enough? Listen, I am totally stoked that you feel proud to be portly, but it's not like being gay at all. There is no closet to hide in, even if there was, it would not have enough space for all of you. You are all unrealistic delusional lunatics if you think that you are in any way truly suffering any real discrimination. Your decisions and way of life are not causing you to be hunted down and beaten or put you at risk of being killed by your fellows for demanding to be treated the same. Fat rights is bullshit. Straight up. Fat people have always been able to vote, get married to who they want, walk in the front of stores of their choice, and work where they want to. You are all clutching at straws to find things to be pissed about, your supposed fat discrimination is often times the same as the bullshit lawsuits that people do to just get famous or get money. You have some legit ideas which are simply, people should judge based on what you do and who you are. But if you are the sort of person who *obsesses* about your weight for good or for ill how are you better than your supposed detractors! You're telling people they can and should be proud to be overweight, they are telling you to be overskinny, neither is good. Grow up or get out of the gene pool. "Sorry to be long winded", but it needs to be said.
